CLUBS AND STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
New student organizations and clubs pop up at FA all the time. Here are some of the many offered this year.
ART CLUB
Members of the Art Club share a common interest in art of all kinds. Aspiring painters, potters, photographers, sculptors, and others meet under art teacher Jane Blay’s guidance to explore their interests and brighten the school with their artwork.
ASIAN CULTURE CLUB
Foxcroft Academy has been augmented by a diverse Asian population in recent years. The Asian Culture Club, advised by Chinese and ESL teacher Robert Canning, celebrates Asian culture and seeks to educate the student body. The Asian Culture Club often presents at school assemblies and hosts Asian film nights.
CIVIL RIGHTS TEAM
Led by Head of School Arnold Shorey, the Civil Rights team strives to eradicate bias at FA through education and awareness efforts. The team's recent efforts include leading the school in No Name Calling Week, educating the student body about Martin Luther King Jr.'s message at an annual remembrance presentation, and spearheading many other projects that aim to eliminate discrimination at the Academy.
COOKING CLUB
Cooking Club members, who meet with ESL teacher Karen Smith, are food enthusiasts who enjoy cooking, eating, and sharing their work with others. One of the most popular school-run community events each year is International Food Night. The event, endorsed by the Cooking Club, introduces the community to foods from all over the world–prepared and served by FA’s diverse international student body.
DANCE CLUB
Chinese students looking for an opportunity to practice traditional Chinese Dance originally established the Dance Club, but over time the club expanded to include members interested in many forms of dance. Advised by spanish teacher Mirna Reyes-Henderson, the club shares their interest with the school at assemblies and during student talent shows.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND OUTDOOR CLUBS
Students invested in maintaining a clean and healthy world established the Environmental Club with Technology Integration specialist Mia Morrison as the advisor. Students of the club educate the school on energy saving and recycling. They also introduce initiatives that seek to preserve the Maine outdoors, actions very much appreciated by the Outdoors Club, advised by Jack McLeod, which seeks to enjoy the beautiful local environment while partaking in outdoor activities like hiking, boating, hunting, and fishing.
EQUESTRIAN CLUB
Established in 2015, the Equestrian Club, advised by Assistant Head of School for External Affairs Chris McGary, is a club for students passionate about horses. Members train at Infinity Farm in Dover-Foxcroft and plan to compete at regional horse shows.
INTERNATIONAL CLUB
International Club is an organization for aspiring world travelers. In the past decade the club has made ten trips, travelling to Spain, France, Costa Rica, Italy, and Canada. Led by science teacher Julie Willcott and Spanish teacher Mirna Reyes-Henderson, the club plans and fundraises throughout the year to make the trips possible.
KEY CLUB
Advised by George Rolleston, Key Club is a student-led organization that serves the community and provides its members with a chance to build character and develop leadership. Key Club members volunteer locally at Pine Tree Hospice, the Center Theatre, and the YMCA. They also lead the school in service projects such as Eliminate Week, March of Dimes, and the Reindeer Run. In the 2013-2014 service year, the Foxcroft Academy Key Club completed 50 service projects, averaged 48 hours of service per member, and raised more than $9000. For their accomplishments, the club was awarded First Place for Yearly Achievement in the Gold Division at the New England District Education Leadership & Service Conference.
LANGUAGE CLUBS
Chinese Club, advised by Robert Canning; French Club, advised by Pierre Gaudion; Latin Club, advised by Peter Hartel; and Spanish Club, advised by Mirna Reyes-Henderson, organize in appreciation of the foreign languages offered at FA. Each club meets to further pursue its language beyond the classroom, and the clubs often share their enthusiasm with the school through presentations, school events, and language competitions.
MATH TEAM
Led by intrepid advisor Wayne Strout, the Math Team continues to be one of the best in the region, routinely outpacing regional competition and placing high at state competition. In 2014, Pony mathelete Alex Hung was Maine’s top-scoring junior and went on to compete for Maine at the national level.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
National Honor Society was established to recognize outstanding high school students and prepare them for a life of learning, service, and success. Advisor Peter Hartel encourages members to follow the club’s motto–noblesse oblige, “From those to whom much is given, much is expected.”
PALS
A PAL is a student helper who assists with orientation, step-up days and nights, and parent-teacher conferences. Organized by counselor Kandi Martin, they are a group dedicated to helping others.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council is a student-run organization open to anyone who wants to commit to representing his or her peers. Student Council meets once a week to discuss the interests of the student body and to help organize many school events like Homecoming, Winter Carnival, and Spring Fling.
